People all over the world cheered as New York's Times Square celebrated the coming of the New Year with its traditional and iconic ball drop, lowering a 6-ton 12-foot wide glitter ball with 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LED lights and 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles in the run-up to midnight.

The ball descended 70 feet in its annual 1 minute journey along with a countdown, coming to rest at the bottom of its pole at midnight.  As the ball's lights turned off, a sign with the 2-0-1-1 digits lighted up.  Human power from the Duracell Smart Power Lab, where New Yorkers and tourists jumped aboard a Power Rover and pedaled, helped illuminate the 2011 numerals.
