After 6 seasons and 120 episodes, oe of TV's highest rated shows finally came to an end. The 2 1/2-hour Lost Finale "The End" aired on Sunday, May 23, 2010 from 9:00PM-11:30PM, from the originally scheduled two hours.

Lost Finale Explained

All the flash forwards and flash backs of the show were in fact the reality and things that happened. The plane crash was real. The smoke monster was real. Jacob and protecting the island was real. Hurley’s love for ranch dipping sauce was real.

The Flash Sideways as they came to be known could be described as purgatory. Each character which died in the show in fact died in the real universe to be then transported to a single point in that Lost purgatory.

The world in the Flash Sideways was somehow mutually created by all of the Lost characters, as a place to "meet up" before moving on to the afterlife. For what? To work out and accept the things that each person did in life and to come to terms with their lives before moving. To remember and to let go.

Everyone dies - but they didn't all die together. The final aim was the after life, so everyone had to die to reach that point including those who managed to escape the island.

"Lost" fans have suggested a variety of theories to explain the mysteries of the ABC series since it launched in 2004: alien races, secret government plots, shared dreams, purgatory.
